“The Black Church” Film Screening

June 3 - 24, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm 2021  |  Calvary UMC Sanctuary

2525 North Rock Road, Wichita, KS, USA

Calvary UMC’s Racial Justice team wants to invite you to a four part screening of “The Black Church,” a documentary on the history, culture and current life of Black Churches in America.
We will gather on Thursdays in June: June 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th to screen each one hour episode in the series. Join us at 6pm in the sanctuary to watch the episode and stay after the screening for small group discussion.
On June 3rd and 10th, we will “explore the roots of African American religion with the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the extraordinary ways enslaved Africans preserved and adapted their faith practices from slavery to emancipation”
On June 17th and 24th, we will “discover how the Black Church expanded its reach to address social inequality and minister to those in need, from the Jim Crow South to the heroic phase of the civil rights movement and the Black Church’s role in the present.”
Whether you want to come for one of the four episodes or join in all four weeks of learning, you are welcome! Whether you want to stay to process the episode in small groups or would like to come and watch and leave right after, you are welcome!
Our hope is that this series will give our church family a chance to learn together, ask big questions, and dive into an American church experience that connects with, but is different from, our own!
RSVP HERE so we know you’re coming!
An online zoom discussion will also be available for those who can’t make the in person gathering or would like to continue the conversation. Be on the lookout for this invitation soon!
